Bringing home a fresh bouquet? Proper flower care makes all the difference. Here’s how to make your cut flowers last longer in a vase.
Always start with a clean vase
Dirty vases lead to bacteria that shorten flower life. Wash your vase with hot water and soap before use.

Trim the stems at a 45° angle
Cut 1–2 cm off each stem using sharp scissors or a knife. This increases water absorption and helps flowers stay hydrated.
Remove all leaves below the waterline
Submerged leaves rot quickly, creating bacteria. Strip off any leaves that would sit in water.
Change the water every 1–2 days
Use lukewarm water and rinse the vase each time. Fresh water = fresh flowers.
Use flower food (or make your own)
Flower food keeps the water clean and nourishes your blooms.
DIY version:
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
A drop of bleach
in 1 liter of water.

Keep flowers cool and out of direct sunlight
Avoid placing flowers near heaters, in full sun, or near fruit bowls (fruit emits ethylene gas that ages flowers faster).
Remove wilted flowers immediately
This keeps the rest of the bouquet fresh and prevents bacteria from spreading.
